What lies in the future of our youth? Essay -- Persuasive, Youth Deli
What lies in the future of our youth? Do we really know? The beliefs should be believed that we have the power to mold the minds of our children, that we have to take any steps necessary to make sure that the mold is something that we would like to see in our up and coming youth molded into, and that we cannot allow this mold to be broken. Our basic survival depends on those minds of our youth that we need to take the time to mold today. Youth delinquency is a massively growing problem in the United States today. Youth delinquency ââ¬Å"refers to abnormal social or legal behavior by children or adolescents, for dealing with juveniles, such as juvenile detention centers. There are a multitude of different theories on the causes of crime, most if not all of which can be applied to the causes of youth crimeâ⬠(Youth Delinquency, 1999 p.1). A youth (juvenile) delinquent is one who repeatedly commits crime. There are multiple reasons for the increase in criminal activity amount the nationââ¬â¢s youthful population. ââ¬Å"A substantial amount of research has been devoted to the factors that may put youth at risk for delinquency. These risk factors can be found in every life domain (individual, family, school, community, and peer group), and everyone experiences some degree of risk in his or her life. With regard to juvenile delinquency, the number, types, duration, timing and severity of risks may increase the likelihood that a youth will engage in antisocial behaviorâ⬠(Christle, Jolivette and Nelson, 2005 p. 70). Delinquent and criminal behavior among young people, as they negotiate the transition from childhood to adulthood, is an increasingly complex and confusing world. For many young people today, traditional patterns guiding the relations... ...quency. ââ¬Å"With the development of delinquency in youth being influenced by numerous factors, prevention efforts are comprehensive in scope. Prevention services include activities such as substance abuse education and treatment, family counseling, youth mentoring, parenting education, educational support, and youth shelteringâ⬠(Youth Delinquency, 1999 p.4). These protective measures should also include protective factors, such as things as strong social support systems, positive role-models and psycho-social education. Encouraging our youth to volunteer promotes civic-mindedness and gives them the opportunity to associate with other positive youths and people. When our youth are being held accountable and takes responsibility for all of their actions and behaviors, they will have a better and more balanced self-esteem and more confident when dealing with the world.

Land Grab Essay
Agricultural Investment, and the Scramble for Food Securityââ¬â¢ by Michael Kugelman and Susan L. Levenstein, has offered us: deep, multi-positional insight presented by a host of authors with valid sources on one of the most interesting phenomenons happening within our current economic system. From the surface it seems to be talking about how developed food- secure nations are buying up swaths of farmlands from the worlds most food- insecure countries, but after a deeper look into the book, this phenomenon and itââ¬â¢s complexities is much greater than that. There are twelves chapters in this book, each chapter written by a different author or authors, getting into different aspects and perspectives of this so called ââ¬Å"Land Grabbingâ⬠issue. The first chapter (introduction) is written by Michael Kugelman, followed by some history by Derek Byerlee, an overview by David Hallam, social and economic mplications by Alexandra Spieldoch and Sophia Murphy, environmental impacts by Laura A. German, Wouter M. J. Achten, and Manuel R. Guariguata, investorsââ¬â¢ perspectives by Gary R. Blumenthal, improving outcomes by Ruth Meinzen-Dick and Helen Markelova, regional perspectives on Africa, Asia, Latin America, Central and Eastern Europe and the Former Soviet Union by Chido Makunike, Raul Q. Montemayor, Bastiaan P. Reydon and Vitor B. Fernandes, Carl Atkin respectively, and finishes off with ââ¬Å"Recommendations and Conclusionâ⬠by Michael Kugelman. The term ââ¬Å"Land Grabâ⬠used on the book cover and in its pages depicts a large owerful foreign entity that acquire large amounts of land that is usually used by local poor communities to produce food and/or provide other essential basic human needs. These communities are often displaced soon after because they are banned from the site in which they have cultivated and lived off of. This term (Land Grab) is used quite fittingly as Michael Kugelman and Susan L. Levensteinââ¬â¢s position on this matter is quite critical and essentially focused on the inequalities and other adverse effects of this phenomenon. That being said, the book still does mention a few xamples where there was a net positive outcome from these large land leasing transactions. The book also accepts whatââ¬â¢s happening and takes on a very realistic way of approaching this issue. First, we must acknowledge the underlying causes. The first major event that nave made significant impact on this global farmland market was the food crises in 2007 and 2008. The global prices of food has spiked, riots have increased, and export bans have been created to keep the availability and the prices of food low within exporting nations. This created a huge problem for importing nations as their food security as being undermined. The richer importing nations quickly started looking abroad to lease land for food security. These large scale land transactions, however, is not a new phenomenon, non-food commodities such as tea and rubber has been produced on leased land for a long time, but the amount of land being acquired by these large entities have never increased so dramatically in the past. Estimates of 203 million hectares to 230 million hectares of land have been approved or is under negotiation from 2000-2010. That is roughly the size of Western Europe. With increases of urbanization (taking ver farmland), population, food consumption, bio-fuel consumption, droughts, and the temperature rising causing decreases in yields, it does not seem like this land grabbing trend will stop any time soon. Of course when talking about root causes, we canââ¬â¢t omit the incentives for the host countries: better technology, more local employment, better farm yields, better infrastructure, and most of all, money in the hostââ¬â¢s pockets. As a matter of fact, because of this money making opportunity, a lot of these nations are leasing with very lax regulations, tax incentives, tax holidays and other perks and benefits such as Pakistanââ¬â¢s 100,000 men security force to protect the leased land. So the premise is set, and since weââ¬â¢re currently embedded in this economic system, thereââ¬â¢s no running away from it, at least not for a long time coming. So what is the problem? That we have to take a closer look at these case studies. The case studies presented in the book are focused on the key regions of investments from a descending order: Africa, South E. Asia, Latin America, Central/ Eastern Europe, and former Soviet Union. The key investors would include but is not limited to: capital rich food importing nations such as the Arab States of the Persian Gulf, China, Japan, South Korea, and India, it also includes agricultural business firms from the West. The book also mentions that it isnââ¬â¢t always the capital rich countries that are investing in these large swaths of lands, North Africa for example is investing in Sub-Saharan Africa and Southeast Asian nations are investing in each otherââ¬â¢s soils. Similar trends in these case studies show up repeatedly: benefits to local communities are for the most part not materializing, many local communities have been displaced (Ex. A British project in Uganda displaced roughly 20,000 people), arge quantities of fresh water is being consumed, and deforestation is rapidly occurring (Ex. Sub-Saharan Africaââ¬â¢s palm oil production have caused 100% deforestation rates). These trends should not be surprising as most of the host governments and investors are in the market purely for self interest and show little regard to the impacts ot poor local communities and the environment. These adverse effects creates a problem of conflict between the people and the large entities in these land transactions. We can see these conflicts in Madagascar (South Koreaââ¬â¢s deal to buy 1. 3 million hectors of farmland sparked widespread rotests in 2009 to bring down the government), Uganda (Indian corporate investment in Uganda farmland has sparked violent responses), and Kenya (Kenyans have vowed to fight back violently after being evicted to accommodate a sugar plantation). It is no wonder now that Pakistan has offered 100,000 men security force to protect the leased land. And with this 100,000 men security force, we can also see extent of disregard for these poor local local communities. The book ends with a more optimistic perspective on this matter. It is very realistic as it provides ways to make these transactions better, and morally Just for veryone. It talked a little about the increase in transparency on this subject. It itself has brought light to the public and continues to do so. But not only do the authors want to inform academics, policy makers, business people, and the general public, I believe that the authors of the book also hopes to encourage better provisions for hiring locals, selling the food back to local communities (a few case studies in Asia has shown that this trend has occurred and the benefits to local communities have actually materialized [this gives us a little more hope for the future ahead of us]), and protecting the environment. Hopefully the book will also have provided enough information to influence host countries to create more robust laws and regulations and offer to support small holders (host countries are a lot more restrictive on small holders than big investors) so these local communities are not completely exploited (studies suggest that small holders are a lot more efficient, environmental friendly, and morally Just compared to big holders). The book also gives sheds a bit of light on alternatives such as drought resistant farming technology/methods (less reliant to farm abroad) and Asiaââ¬â¢s plan to form of rice pools so less entities gets compromised.

After living through a long and tumultuous life of enslavement and abuse at the hands of her master, Jacobs was eventually able to escape to the North and write an autobiography of the horrors and hardships she faced. The law did not punish a slave owner who sexually abused his slave because they were considered chattel or property. To add to this fact, if a slave woman had a child by he r white master, she was prohibited from disclosing who the childââ¬â¢s father was. Jacobs herself was sexually harassed by her slaveowner, Dr. James Norcom also known as Dr. Flint in the autobiography. The abuse began after her mistress died and Jacobs was sold to Flintââ¬â¢s family as the property of his daughter. Flint attempted to take control of every aspect of Jacobââ¬â¢s mind and body. Despite her attempts at evading his abuses, he would still find ways to abuse her and debase her morals. Incidents like the one that Jacobs faced were the norm for women in slavery. Jacobsââ¬â¢s situation was different in that she had family ties in her neighborhood and had a well-respected grandmother that lived a block away from her. This was not the case with most slaves as they were separated from their family and if they dare spoke up, they would be severely punished. Modern Day Slavery in Texas Essay Example For Students
Modern Day Slavery in Texas Essay Modern Day Slavery in Texas Human Trafficking, best known as modern day slavery, is a major problem in Texas. Human trafficking can be defined into two types of Trafficking: Involuntary servitude which includes the domestic work such as Nannies, maids, and housekeeping, the business operations which consist of the Nail salons, massage parlors, and construction, and also the larger operations like the factory sweat shops and Agricultural farming. The second Trafficking is the most lucrative being the Sex exploitation of children, women, and men. This trafficking consists of operations of ight clubs, modern day brothels, services of women and men being used as escorts, and the victim being controlled by a Pimp. Many people think that slavery ended back when Lincoln was president, when in fact today it is more productive than ever. In 2000 the first law on the Federal level was placed in to affect, the Trafficking Victims Protection Act (TVPA). This law assists the States with funding to help local and state law enforcement to concentrate on the efforts of attacking the war of modern day slavery. In 2003, Texas being one of two states, presented a law that ratified illegalization of Human Trafficking in the State. Victims who are forced into trafficking are those aged 10-35 and who are indigenous, ethnic minority, rural, or refugee groups (A Report of the Texas Advisory Committee to the United States Commission on Civil Rights, August 2011, p2). A vast majority of victims rescued each year are rescued from Texas. According to estimates within the first 48 hours of running away is when victims are more likely to be swindled into sex trading. Human Trafficking has a negative effect on the economy and society in both the sex industry and labor enslavement. In the involvement of the sex trafficking, Victims suffer extreme physical and mental abuse(p2), causing the victim to have to have some type of treatment if injuries are sustained. In some cases female victims become pregnant, creating a need for continually healthcare. Without having the means for health insurance, Victims are left to either seek help by state funded health insurance which in turns raises taxes or not pay the bill at all leaving the hospital or clinic to write off the bill that was accumulated therefore causing medical cost to increase. In the cases that the victim does become pregnant, there is need for health cost for the baby as well. If the mother gives the baby up for adoption the state is responsible for the cost of caring for the child until adequate living arrangements can be met, if any are even made. In regards to Labor slavery, victims are paid under the table, if paid at all, hence wages are never reported allowing the employer not to pay taxes nor supply the employee with benefits. This also causes an increase in taxes. Cheaper labor paid under federal wage, places a major pressure on competing legal companies as they cannot meet the supply and demand for what the illegal operation is providing. This in turns causes the demand for labor to Increase, suDJectlng more vlctlms to De explolte t a. I Is estlmatea tnat Oue to tnls loss of wages, forced labor brings in over $20 million a year. With the amplified demands for human trafficking and Texas being on the Mexico border, the operation places strain on Border control. Texas is considered the epicenter of human trafficking in the United States. (Living Safe: Houston and Texas a hub for human trafficking, Your Houston News; WEB) An unknown amount of victims are moved in and out of Texas on daily bases. With the activity of the trafficking operations, crime also surges, lacing more stress on law enforcement officers. .uec733b580e9de14cef3d07fda8960b95 , .uec733b580e9de14cef3d07fda8960b95 .postImageUrl , .uec733b580e9de14cef3d07fda8960b95 .centered-text-area { min-height: 80px; position: relative; } .uec733b580e9de14cef3d07fda8960b95 , .uec733b580e9de14cef3d07fda8960b95:hover , .uec733b580e9de14cef3d07fda8960b95:visited , .uec733b580e9de14cef3d07fda8960b95:active { border:0!important; } .uec733b580e9de14cef3d07fda8960b95 .clearfix:after { content: ""; display: table; clear: both; } .uec733b580e9de14cef3d07fda8960b95 { display: block; transition: background-color 250ms; webkit-transition: background-color 250ms; width: 100%; opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #95A5A6; } .uec733b580e9de14cef3d07fda8960b95:active , .uec733b580e9de14cef3d07fda8960b95:hover { opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #2C3E50; } .uec733b580e9de14cef3d07fda8960b95 .centered-text-area { width: 100%; position: relative ; } .uec733b580e9de14cef3d07fda8960b95 .ctaText { border-bottom: 0 solid #fff; color: #2980B9; font-size: 16px; font-weight: bold; margin: 0; padding: 0; text-decoration: underline; } .uec733b580e9de14cef3d07fda8960b95 .postTitle { color: #FFFFFF; font-size: 16px; font-weight: 600; margin: 0; padding: 0; width: 100%; } .uec733b580e9de14cef3d07fda8960b95 .ctaButton { background-color: #7F8C8D!important; color: #2980B9; border: none; border-radius: 3px; box-shadow: none; font-size: 14px; font-weight: bold; line-height: 26px; moz-border-radius: 3px; text-align: center; text-decoration: none; text-shadow: none; width: 80px; min-height: 80px; background: url(https://artscolumbia.org/wp-content/plugins/intelly-related-posts/assets/images/simple-arrow.png)no-repeat; position: absolute; right: 0; top: 0; } .uec733b580e9de14cef3d07fda8960b95:hover .ctaButton { background-color: #34495E!important; } .uec733b580e9de14cef3d07fda8960b95 .centered-text { display: table; height: 80px; padding-left : 18px; top: 0; } .uec733b580e9de14cef3d07fda8960b95 .uec733b580e9de14cef3d07fda8960b95-content { display: table-cell; margin: 0; padding: 0; padding-right: 108px; position: relative; vertical-align: middle; width: 100%; } .uec733b580e9de14cef3d07fda8960b95:after { content: ""; display: block; clear: both; } READ: Rates of Reaction EssayMost important issue about human trafficking is the overall lack of knowledge, society has. Most people living in Texas dont realize the major role Texas plays in the exploitation of the victims of commercial sex and labor slaves. Texas has many accesses to the rest of the United States such as major cities with large airports, Interstates running across the country, and many other ways to provide the criminals a way to expand business. Many of the operations or businesses are disguised as legitimate businesses, allowing peration to continue with no suspect of any illegal activity. Commercial sex and labor slavery are both major examples of human trafficking. Both having history dating back into the days of Lincoln, yet even with all the technology and advancement in law enforcement, is an uncontrollable operation. Texas, one of the largest states, has more cases of human trafficking than most of the other states. Therefore with the laws already in placed being updated every year, victims will be given more respect and rights allowing them to come forward so that the operation can be stopped from within by controlling the demand at the same time.
